Iran has declared its intention to relocate its capital from Tehran, the country’s largest northern city, to the Makran coast in the south. This decision to move the capital, which has been in Tehran for over two centuries, is driven by several considerations.
Iran is exploring plans to shift its capital from Tehran to address mounting issues of overpopulation, power shortages, and water scarcity. Fatemeh Mohajerani, an Iranian government spokeswoman, highlighted growing ecological pressures and announced the formation of two councils to assess the feasibility of the move and foster a “sea-based economy” in Makran, a key trade region.
While Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref emphasized the relocation as a government priority, critics argue the logistical and financial challenges are immense. Conservative journalist Ali Gholhaki questioned the project’s feasibility, warning of potentially enormous costs and extended timelines. Despite differing opinions, Iranian leadership continues to explore the relocation as part of efforts to ensure long-term sustainability and economic stability.
