In a significant step towards national security and disaster readiness, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has announced the 2nd Civil Defence Exercise “Operation Shield” to be held on 29th May 2025. The large-scale exercise will cover all districts in the bordering states and union territories of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, and Chandigarh along the Western border of the country.
This initiative aims to address critical gaps identified during the 1st Civil Defence Exercise conducted on 7th May 2025, where vulnerabilities in civil defence preparedness were observed.
Key activities during the exercise will include:
- General and silent recall of Civil Defence wardens, volunteers, and stakeholders such as NCC, NSS, NYKS, Bharat Scouts & Guides.
- Simulation of air raids from enemy aircraft, drones, and missile attacks.
- Activation of hotlines between the Air Force and Civil Defence Control Rooms, and centralized air raid sirens.
- Execution of blackout measures in vulnerable areas while ensuring emergency and critical services remain functional.
“Operation Shield” is a vital initiative to enhance the preparedness of civil defence forces, ensuring a swift and coordinated response in times of crisis. By involving key states and union territories, the exercise reinforces India’s resilience along its western front, preparing both authorities and communities for potential challenges ahead.
