Whakaari/White Island Volcano Activity

- Whakaari/White Island volcano, located in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, has shown increased activity with minor ash emissions and heightened gas and steam plumes.

In New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, the active stratovolcano Whakaari / White Island experienced a major eruption on December 9, 2019. At the time, 47 tourists were visiting the island, known for its volcanic activity. The eruption resulted in 22 fatalities, including two individuals whose bodies were never recovered.
