Whakaari/White Island Volcano Activity

- Whakaari/White Island volcano, located in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, has shown increased activity with minor ash emissions and heightened gas and steam plumes.
- Satellite image from January 7, 2025, captured by Landsat 9, shows the volcano in a relatively calm phase, followed by reports of “heightened unrest” by January 13, 2025.

- A partially submerged stratovolcano, constantly active with occasional explosive eruptions.
In New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, the active stratovolcano Whakaari / White Island experienced a major eruption on December 9, 2019. At the time, 47 tourists were visiting the island, known for its volcanic activity. The eruption resulted in 22 fatalities, including two individuals whose bodies were never recovered.
